Gang Programming QFP PICs
Lloyd Research has recently released three new gang socket modules for programming PICs in various QFP packages. It is also possible to program PICs in circuit.
All of the modules can be fitted to the M9000 gang programmer and, as usual, two modules can be fitted to double the capacity. These modules are completely compatible with the older L9000 programmer.
For 44 pin MQFP devices such as 16F877, the appropriate module is the PL664 which is fitted with four clamshell sockets. TQFP parts are supported by the PL662 module which has two clamshell sockets and 68 pin parts such as 16C923 are supported by the PL663 module.
The use of specialist socket modules is far more economical than fitting crude socket adaptors into DIL sockets.
In some applications, there may be an additional requirement for programming PICs in circuit. This can easily be achieved by connecting a simple ribbon cable to the socket module. Two socket modules can program two external PICs whilst four socket modules can program four PICs. A simple control language allows the user to control the programmer over the RS232 port.
