H8000 In-Circuit Production Programmer
The H8000 is a new kind of production programmer designed for programming Renesas (formerly Hitachi) H8 and H8S micro-controllers in-circuit without needing a PC.
The programmer is housed in a small plastic case not much bigger than a large matchbox and is fitted with both E10 and USB/RS232 ports as standard. Since these ports are typically used during product development, they provide an easy path from development to production.
The H8000 is fitted with both an RS232 and an optically isolated logic interface as well as a manual push button. It can, therefore, easily be built into and controlled by an ATE system for example, or used by an operator on a production line. The H8000 is fitted with four status LEDs with corresponding signals available over the logic interface.
A Windows utility is supplied to set up the H8000. After this, no PC is required which considerably reduces the complexity of ’in-circuit programming’ and is faster than using a PC.
In-circuit programming saves the need to handle delicate devices in manual programmers or expensive automated programmers.
If the H8000 is built into an ATE system, it is possible to increase production whilst programming parts at the same time by converting from a single to a dual site fixture. Consider the case of an ATE test which takes about 15 seconds with an additional 5 seconds needed to fit the next board giving a cycle time of 20 seconds. If provision is made for a second board on the same ATE system, the first board can be programmed whilst the second board is being tested. This eliminates the handling time so the cycle time goes down to 15 seconds, thereby increasing production by 25%. If the ATE system already has two test positions, providing that the programming time + the handling time is less than the test time, the production rate stays the same with the added benefit that parts are programmed with no time penalty.
