Fast Serial ’In Circuit’ Programmer
The F5000 is a new type of programmer designed for the fast serial programming of micro controllers and memories on board in a production environment and for updating products in the field. As both the programming algorithm and data for up to seven targets can be held in the programmer’s flash memory, no PC is needed. In many cases, serial programming is both faster than using JTAG (where available) and less expensive.
The F5000 can easily be built into an ATE system as it is fitted with an optically isolated logic interface as well as four status LEDs - Busy, Pass, Fail and Fault. It is also fitted with a full ’self test’ facility.
The programmer can also be set up to start when a button is pressed or a target is detected.
If the F5000 is not being used in an ATE environment and the user does not want to use a PC, the data set to be used can be selected by fitting one of seven optional keys known as ’Chess’ keys. Each differently shaped key is numbered and designated with the name of a Chess piece. An eighth key is fitted with a rotary switch to select any data set. By fitting a ’Chess’ key, the user is effectively selecting a different target program without the need to reload the data from a PC. For example, a product could be loaded with a test program first followed by the application program.
As the F5000 is housed in a small strong plastic case, it can also be used for updating products in the field. Target data can be sent to a remote site over the internet and then downloaded to the programmer using USB in seconds.
Another useful feature is that the F5000 can supply up to 15V to power the target board or to provide a Vpp voltage.
The F5000 is the latest product from Lloyd Research who have been making programmers for nearly 25 years. The company is also the oldest programmer manufacturer in Europe.
